Volcano news

Round-up of the latest information on the eruption is Grímsvötn.

22 May - 11:00 AM

It is becoming obvious that the eruption in Grimsvotn is quite large. There is heavy ashfall reported in the area around the eruption, and people are advised to stay indoors.

Civil Protection agencies are closely monitoring the situation, but as of now, has decided against evacuating the area. For safety reasons, roads have been closed to the area.

The Plume has reached 20 km in height. Flights have been canceled to and from Iceland as a result. The ash particles are much coarser than the ash from Eyjafjallajökull eruption. And there are no indicators yet that there will be more disruption to flights beyond local disturbances.
